Kiko in the Kyoto elementary school.

Kiko, rereferred to in the credits as the Japanese Floaty Girl, was a Monster used by the Facility headquarters in Kyoto, Japan. She was one of the few Monsters seen in the film from different Organization facilities in other countries. She was portrayed by Naomi Dane.

Physical Description and Attributes[]

Kiko is a female ghostly apparition. She bears a stereotypical appearance to how Japanese ghosts (Yurei) look; long, unkempt black hair that falls in front of her face, whiteish skin and black eyes. She has patches of black, rotten skin on her face and hands as well. She wears a long ragged white gown the emits a faint glow around it. At the bottom of her dress is a bright orb of light, possibly being the source from which she is summoned from. There is no lore about Kiko, including her past life when she was alive, but it appears she has not properly crossed over, and her spirit has returned to the physical world to haunt and terrorize the living.

Since the Japanese branch uses her as a way of completing sacrifices, she may be an Onryō, a type of vengeful spirit from Japanese folklore that were able to cause harm to the living after death.

What summons Kiko or how, is unknown.

CITW - floaty girl

Kiko being defeated as the Japanese school girls perform a ritual.

Kiko appears in Kyoto, where she was summoned to target an all-girls class of nine-year-olds, who were sealed within a classroom without any adults. At first Kiko succeeds in terrifying the would-be sacrifices, but The Organization's attempt is defeated when the girls join together and perform an exorcism that binds Kiko's spirit to a frog, defeating her and resulting in the Japanese branch failing to fulfill their half of the sacrifices to the Ancient Ones.

After the ritual, the girls celebrate and exclaim "The evil has been defeated. Now Kiko's spirit will live in the happy frog!" This angers Gary Sitterson, who watches and curses them out on a monitor.

Inspiration[]

Kiko is highly likely based off Japanese folklore of Onryo, which are vengeful spirits originating from people who have been murdered or have committed suicide. They are not granted a peaceful afterlife and haunt the living because of it. Other inspirations include:

Trivia[]

  • Due to the loose translation of Japanese to English, there is speculation whether Kiko's spirit was bound to the frog, or if she became the frog.
  • Kiko is one of two Monsters seen in the film that are from different countries, the other being the Giant Ape.
