The Jack O'Lantern a Monster kept in the Facility. He was listed on the whiteboard and was bet on by the Security Force. He can be seen briefly during the System Purge. He was portrayed by an unknown actor.

Physical Description and Attributes[]

The Jack O'Lantern is a Caucasian, male humanoid creature with a large round pumpkin for a head. On the pumpkin is carved a monstrous face with a huge, sharp-toothed grin. The insides of the carvings appear to be hollow as they are blacked-out and other features cannot be seen from the outside. He appears to be very tall and wears a long, black, 17th/18th-century traveling coat with a white frilled collar, indicating he is from that time era and may be hundreds of years old.

in addition, the Jack O'Lantern has the ability to breathe/blow fire, as seen during the purge.

In the visual companion, a stack of hollow pumpkin decorations can be seen. This is presumably the objects that are used to summon the Jack O'Lantern to the Cabin.

Appearances[]

The Jack O'Lantern was seen several times in the film. The first is during the scene where the elevator pans out to reveal the rest of the Monsters kept in the Facility. The second time he is seen is when Gary Sitterson and Steve Hadley are searching the cube prisons for Dana and Marty; the Jack O'Lantern can be seen standing idly in his cube.

During the system purge, the Jack O'Lantern can be briefly seen on a security camera, blowing fire out of his mouth, presumably at Facility workers. After this he was not seen at any other point in the film.

In behind the scenes footage, the Jack O'Lantern is a Monster that was focused on, specifically because the directors and Monster creators had to use pyrotechnics for part of his design.

Inspiration[]

The Jack O'Lantern, besides resembling the classic symbol of Halloween, was possibly inspired by characters from urban legends and ghostly folklore from Colonial-era New England, particularly those told during Halloween. One likely inspiration is the Headless Horseman from Washington Irving's short story, "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" who, in many interpretations, carried a jack o'lantern for a head. The original Jack O'Lantern legend originates in Ireland and involves a spirit who is rejected by both heaven and hell and is cursed to wander the land endlessly; the burning embers of his head were a gift from the devil, provided so that he can see at night.

Trivia[]

  • In the Official Visual Companion, he was scripted to have been released in the second wave of the purge, meaning he was supposed to have some screen time, but was replaced with the Alien Beast in the film's final version.
  • Its possible that the Jack O'Lantern could have replaced the Fire-Mouthed Woman, since both Monsters possess pyrokinesis or other traits that are associated with fire.
