The Giant is a Monster kept inside the Facility. He was listed on the whiteboard, and the Zoology department bet on his release. He was not seen during the System Purge.
Physical Description and Attributes[]
The Giant resembles a typical giant human from folklore or mythology. He appears as an elderly male, with ashen skin, long unkempt hair, and a long beard, almost making him troll-like in appearance. He wears a long-sleeved, green shirt and brown, baggy pants and black shoes or slippers. He also carries a large stick or club as his weapon of choice. His natural size and strength make him a fearsome threat.
There is also a second female Giant in the film, the Giant Woman, but it is unknown if they are related in anyway or come from the same realm/time era/mythology.
It is unknown what item from Cabin's Cellar summons the Giant. Possibilities would include a club similar to the one he uses, or perhaps some sort of item from its mythical origins. Another possibility is an oversized item of clothing.
Appearances[]
The giant does not appear in the film's final version. However, he can be seen in the film's behind the scenes footage. One of the developers of the film stated they designed a cube barely big enough for an adult to stand in, using the Giant and Giant Woman as an example.
Inspiration[]
Giants are present in almost every civilization, one of the oldest references being Greco-Roman Mythology. There are perhaps most common in Norse Mythology, Celtic Mythology and European folklore. Giants appear in works of classic literature, including the man-eating Cyclops of Homer's Odyssey and the satirical novel Gargantua and Pantagruel from 16th century France.
In terms of horror films and folklore, giants are found in many tales, a few examples include the 1960s series Land of the Giants, the 2010 film Trollhunter, the fairy tale "Jack and the Beanstalk", and The Wrath of Paul Bunyan. Giants occur in religious works such as the Bible, which mentions the Philistine giant Goliath, whose stated height exceeds known human limits. Giants also occur in The Chronicles of Narnia books and The Chronicles of Narnia (film series). In the anime and manga world, giants known as Titans are the primary antagonists in the ongoing series Attack on Titan.
This giant bears the most resemblance to (and is most likely a direct reference to) the the titular character, Eegah, from the 1962 horror b-movie of the same name. Both giants have a long beard, carry a club, and physically resemble tall, primitive humans.
Trivia[]
- In the script, the Giant takes the place of the Angry Molesting Tree; instead of the tree grabbing the guard and pulling him into the elevator, it is described as "a giant hand."
