The Scarecrow Folk,or simply, The Scarecrows are a group of humanoid Monsters kept in the Facility. They are listed on the Whiteboard and are bet on by the DNA Archives department. They are seen towards the end of the System Purge.
Physical Description and Attributes[]
The Scarecrow Folk are a group of possibly human or undead humanoids. There are four of them in total, and all are seen dressed in raggedy, withered clothing. They wear long, black button-down shirts and baggy dark green pants. On their faces, they wear what look like old sacks that has been stitched onto their skin. Pieces of straw can be seen coming from their mouths, ears and head. Overall it looks like they have been around for a long time, enough to start to decay and rot, similarly to how an ordinary scarecrow would if left outside long enough. Each of the Scarecrow Folk's masks are a different shape and facial structure, making them somewhat unique to each other, but this is their only noticeable feature. The origins of the Scarecrow Folk are unknown; whether they were ordinary humans who somehow were transformed or bound with scarecrows, or if they were always this way and were created by some force of magic or evil.
They use many types of weapons, such as ordinary knives and other types of farming tools like sickles and shears. Their sadistic personalities resemble the Buckner Family, as they too are a group of pain-worshiping beings who work as a team to kill their victims.
It is likely that the haystack, pitchforks, and scarecrow seen in the Cellar summon them.
Appearances[]
The Scarecrow folk are only seen at the end of the Purge. When the Control Room is breached, the Scarecrow Folk, along with the Giant Tarantula are the first to enter. While Steve Hadley fights off the Tarantula, Daniel Truman shoots at the Scarecrow Folk who are coming at them, but the bullets are ineffective. They attack and stab Truman repeatedly, tearing open his insides. In a final act of defiance, Truman detonates a grenade, which kills both him and the Scarecrow Folk, making them one of few monsters to be killed on camera.
In the visual companion, the Scarecrow Folk are featured heavily. The masks the actors wore during the film are highlighted most.
Inspiration[]
Due to their decayed, semi-human appearance and their tendency to be found in isolated rural areas, scarecrows are a common antagonist in horror movies. Examples include: Night of the Scarecrow, Scarecrows, Husk, Scarecrow Gone Wild, Hollow Ground, the Goosebumps story The Scarecrows Walk At Midnight, Dark Night of the Scarecrow (1981), The Doctor Who episodes "Human Nature" and "Family of Blood", Dark Harvest, and The Town that Dreaded Sundown and Scarecrow from Batman. The eponymous Creeper from the Jeepers Creepers franchise also impersonates a scarecrow in one film.
